Shopping in Paris

Paris is teeming with shops, be it high-end luxury brands, small delicatessens, unusual boutiques… the city pretty much has it all.

Although I have yet to discover many areas of the city, here is a breakdown of some of the best places to shop in Paris.

If designer clothes/accessories are on your wish list, head to the striking Place Vendome and the nearby surrounding streets (particularly Rue Saint Honoré). Here you will find many, rather pricy stores such as Chanel and Van Cleef & Arpels (stunning jewellery.)

In terms of more common, popular chains such as Zara and Mango, your best bet is along Rue de Rivoli- a seemingly endless street lined with many familiar shops.

In addition to this, there are several large department stores (Galeries Lafayette in the 9e, BHV in the 4e, Printemps in the 9e, and my favourite of all, Le Bon Marché in the 7e).

Food-wise, I highly recommend a visit to La Grande Epicerie de Paris which is in fact attached to Le Bon Marché. It is literally like walking into the finest, most Parisian delicatessen ever. The shelves are stacked high with pots of unusual mustards, terrines, mouth-watering madeleines… it’s honestly worth the hype! Aside from this, there are of course many, much smaller ‘epicerie’ style food stores that offer equally delicious French gastronomical delights.

If vintage clothing is your thing, head straight to the Marais district where you will find many independent stores along the quartier’s cobbled streets. There is also a vintage pop up store in the BHV department store (also in the Marais) which is packed with all manner of denim wonders and printed scarves/skirts.

If your’e on the look out for interior pieces, I suggest Rue du Bac and the immediate surrounding streets. Lampshades, chandeliers, silk cushions… it’s all there. I must also add to this the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen which is essentially a whole cluster of pop-up stores selling (at reasonably high prices), furniture, glass, silver in addition to many more quirky items. Worth a visit even if just to admire the goods…

Other streets which deserve a mention include the Champs-Élysées (tends to be quite busy), Boulevard St. Germain and Boulevard Haussmann.

(I am also in the process of creating another post with suggestions of individual shops that I have discovered during my time here.)

  1. I’m not much of a shopper, but I do LOVE going into food shops (even grocery stores) while on vacation just to see the variety of tasty treats. Will definitely have to stop by La Grande Epicerie when I’m in Paris this fall. Thanks for the tips!

  2. Since I’ll be living in France this summer, one of the more obvious yet daunting things on my list was to shop in Paris! Thank you for the advice, and I look forward to your post about individual shops!
